Dreary Day at Sea

It's raining today, and I guess if it's going to rain any day of our trip, today is the day.  We had arranged to have the balcony divider opened up between our rooms, but due to the weather, it had to be closed back.  The seats are wet and the weather is chilly, so I don't expect we will spend much time out there today.  The great news is that this is a cruise ship; therefore, there is something going on pretty much every minute of the day.

Zach was up and out of their room early today.  He headed up to the Lido deck for a chocolate muffin, then joined us again for breakfast when we were up and about.  (This time he had a pizza!)  Kelley brought a copy of the Fun Times to breakfast so we could plan our day.  "Alaska Talk" with our cruise director, John Heald at 10:30, shopping seminar @ 11:45, slot tournament at 12:40, art auction @ 1:30, super trivia at 2:30, Bingo at 4 pm.  Whew!  We were sampling everything on board.  A funny footnote about the art auction...each Carnival ship has an art gallery.  At the beginning of each cruise, they have a piece of art by Peter Max on display.  Everyone is welcome to enter a raffle to guess the value of the painting.  Because we were still in port when we walked by the display, Zach googled Peter Max art to help him with his guess, and since he had participated in the raffle, he received a special invitation to today's art auction.  If he brings a guest, he is supposed to receive a gift of some sort. So he took Mom along with him.  While they were at the auction, Kelley and I went to the Lido deck for lunch.  We were lucky enough to catch the hairy chest contest.  It was hilarious, and the winner was well qualified for the win.  At this point, Kelley wasn't feeling well., but  I'm not sure it can be attributed to the movement of the boat or the hairy-chested men.  Ha!  She decided to go take a nap.  I headed to the Super Trivia in the Mad Hatter Theater.  It ended up being a men vs. women deal where each team had a captain and we answered as a group.  It was a little corny.

Afterward, the art auction had concluded for the day, so Mom decided to go back to the room to rest, while Zach and I went to play bingo.  Neither of us won, but I did get an extra $26 on pull-tab lottery ticket that came with my bingo card!  Woot!

The good news is that tonight is our first formal night, but the bad news is that Kelley is sick.  The trash can became her best friend this afternoon, so she spent the rest of the evening in bed.  Since there was little we could do to make her feel better, Zach, mom, and I headed to dinner.   The menu included shrimp w/ a  lobster tail and prime rib.

Alligator fritters

Lobster and shrimp

Apple Pie

Cherries Jubilee
Zach didn't want to be away from Kelley for too long, so we didn't attend any evening activities.  We brought back some mashed potatoes from dinner hoping she would be up to trying to eat, but I don't think she was awake long enough to eat them.  We're hoping she feels better tomorrow.
Eskimo?

Can you see the rainbow?  This was at 9:00pm

Just a small strip of blue sky at night
Tomorrow we tour the Tracy Arm Fjord.  The boat should be moving very slowly, so fingers crossed, it will be easier on Kelley.  We will lose another hour tonight as we change to Alaska's time zone, and with scenery all around, we will likely start our day early so we won't miss anything.
